Relief in Resin

9 October @ 10:30 am - 1:30 pm

Craft Lab · Eco-Resin, Sustainability & Sculptural Expression

A hands-on Craft Lab at ESPRONCEDA, Institute of Art and Culture exploring eco-resin as a material for contemporary craft and sculptural expression, led by artist Marcela Salazar.

This practical session invites participants to discover the creative possibilities of resin while opening a broader conversation around the use of resin in contemporary craft, material choices, sustainability and more responsible approaches to artistic production.

Through experimentation and hands-on making, participants will explore the complete process of transforming an initial clay relief into a finished sculptural object.

From clay to resin

During the workshop, each participant will create their own relief panel in clay, exploring texture, form, volume and composition.

From this original piece, participants will learn how to create an alginate mould and subsequently cast the work in eco-resin, experiencing the different stages involved in moving from a handmade clay model to a final sculptural object.

The workshop will therefore offer a complete introduction to the process:

Clay modelling → Relief creation → Mould making → Eco-resin casting → Final sculptural piece

Beyond learning the technique itself, the session will encourage participants to reflect on how new materials and processes can be integrated into craft practices while maintaining the importance of handmaking, experimentation and individual artistic expression.

Resin, craft & sustainability

The Craft Lab will also create a space to discuss the use of resin within craft and sculpture, including its possibilities and challenges from a sustainability perspective.

Together with Marcela, participants will consider questions around material impact, responsible use, durability, waste and alternatives, exploring how makers can make more conscious material decisions without limiting experimentation and creativity.

The aim is not only to introduce a new technique, but also to encourage a critical and creative approach to the materials we choose and the way we produce.

About the mentor

Marcela Salazar is a Colombian sculptor based in Barcelona whose practice explores sculpture, materiality and contemporary making processes. Specialising in eco-resin, she combines traditional sculptural techniques such as clay modelling and mould-making with experimentation in alternative materials and casting processes.

In Relief in Resin, she will guide participants through the complete creative process, from modelling the original clay relief to producing the final resin piece.
