Clay Container – Slab Building Workshop

5 September @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm

We invite you to a unique CraftLAB ceramics workshop, organised as part of our partnership within the Craftwork 4.0 All programme. During the workshop, participants will learn the basics of the slab-building technique, working with sheets of clay. The artist will also share her experience of creative work in Poland and abroad and offer practical advice to those interested in taking part in artistic programmes and residencies. It is an excellent opportunity to explore possibilities for further development in the world of ceramics.

Slab-building is one of the fundamental techniques for creating both functional and artistic objects. It can be used to make everything from small-scale forms to monumental sculptural works. The method developed by the instructor makes use of clay slabs that are as thin as possible, allowing for the creation of complex, multi-element structures.

Working with clay slabs encourages focus and develops analytical thinking skills while drawing on mathematical knowledge and problem-solving abilities. Careful planning of each stage helps participants construct and maintain the stability and integrity of the final form.

The workshop will begin with an introduction to the possibilities of the technique and the instructor’s artistic practice. As a practical application of slab-building, participants will design and hand-build their own lidded container. The instructor will guide them through every stage of the process, resulting in an object created using an original technique that she has refined over many years.
