Co-Creation
Co-creation Experience – Lyudmil Yordanov – Sweden
“The Academy was pure inspiration – skills, friendships, and new horizons.”
Introduction
During my residency in Tidaholm, I had the opportunity to explore and practice printmaking techniques in an inspiring international environment. I focused on linocut, guided by Bill Haberman, whose teaching combined technical mastery with creative freedom. Living and working in a historic castle together with 20 artists from across Europe was a unique experience – every day filled with learning, exchange of ideas, and inspiration. The atmosphere encouraged collaboration, discovery, and a sense of belonging to a vibrant artistic community. This residency not only enriched my skills but also gave me new perspectives that I now bring into my studio “Yordanovi ART” and share with my students. My co-created piece was a linocut inspired by Bulgarian traditions. I depicted a typical Kuker wearing a fearsome mask – a symbol of my heritage as a third-generation master of Kuker masks. I also included the stars of the European Union as a hidden message about the shared cultural richness of Europe. The process started with sketches inspired by conversations with fellow artists. Through carving and experimenting with inks and papers, the work gradually took shape. I decided to combine my personal heritage – the Kuker tradition – with the idea of masquerades as a pan-European phenomenon. That is why I added the EU stars as a symbol of unity in preserving and promoting the traditions of every country. The final print became not only my work, but also a reflection of the collaborative spirit and cultural exchange within the Academy.
Activities Undertaken
During the Academy I took part in the linocut workshop led by Bill Haberman, where I learned new carving and printing techniques. Each day was dedicated to sketching, carving, and experimenting with presses and different papers. I also actively exchanged knowledge with other artists, discussing processes and inspirations, and presented my final work during the group exhibition. Beyond the workshops, I contributed to the community spirit by sharing my background as a woodcarver and teacher. The relationship with the Host organisation was very supportive – they provided excellent conditions, access to the printmaking facilities, and created an inspiring environment. Their hospitality and guidance made it possible to focus fully on the creative process and collaboration.
Benefits Achieved
The residency expanded my artistic network, connecting me with professionals from more than ten European countries, which opened doors for potential future collaborations and joint projects. I developed stronger communication skills in an international context and gained confidence in presenting my work to a diverse audience. The experience also deepened my understanding of how traditional techniques can be adapted for contemporary artistic practice. In addition, I discovered new approaches to teaching art that I can integrate into my work with students, making my educational methods more engaging and diverse. Overall, the Academy gave me not only technical growth but also new perspectives for long-term professional and creative development.
