I work with traditional Kukeri mask-making, an ancient Bulgarian craft that combines woodcarving, leatherwork, and textile techniques. The masks are part of a centuries-old ritual meant to chase away evil spirits and bring health and fertility to people and the land.

I was born into a family of artisans who have been creating carnival masks for over fifty years, so this craft has been a part of my life since childhood. After spending several years abroad, I returned to Bulgaria, guided by the desire to preserve and modernize this tradition. In my workshop, Yordanovi ART, I craft each mask entirely by hand using carved wood, sheepskin, leather, and horns from least-concern species.

My favorite technique is combining different types of wood to shape expressive faces, which gives each mask a distinct character. For me, this craft is not just work—it’s a way to honor my heritage and keep a living tradition alive.
