In November 2024, in Matera, Italy, the 12 initial platform members, representing 12 European countries (Italy, Sweden, Bulgaria, Greece, Spain, Portugal, Slovenia, Serbia, Ireland, France, Croatia, and Slovakia) met to lay the groundwork for four years of joint cooperation.
A common goal: a European platform for craftsmanship
The platform aims to create the first European “space” entirely dedicated to professionals and organisations active in historical and artistic craftsmanship.
Thanks to funding from the European Creative Europe program’s “European Platforms for the Promotion of Emerging Artists” call, Materahub will coordinate the development of the platform to increase the competitiveness and economic potential of the cultural and creative sector.
The platform will be a reference point for emerging artisans working in ceramics, glass, textiles, metal, leather, wood, stone, paper, embroidery and other sectors.
These professionals will have access to a wide range of opportunities, including:
- Mobility programs and artistic residencies;
- Participation in International Craft Academies and Craft Festivals;
- Presentation of their work at innovative eventssuch as the Craft Movement, the Repository, and the Craft Roadshow;
- Showcase and networking opportunities.
A crucial aspect of the platform will be the promotion of new ways to engage the public, focusing on collaborative and participatory approaches that bring people closer to the world of craftsmanship. At the same time, efforts will be made to break down cultural and geographical barriers through initiatives for sharing and cooperation between different communities and countries.
This will also help to support economic growth and the creation of sustainable jobs in local communities while valuing traditional craftsmanship and skills.
