On April 26 & 27th, Culture Hub Croatia hosted the Skillshare event as part of the Craftwork4All project, turning Split into a hub of creativity, tradition, and community connection. This two-day event invited adults of all backgrounds to immerse themselves in the world of crafts through a series of free, hands-on workshops—each celebrating the richness of traditional techniques while opening doors to new artistic practices. The initiative not only spotlighted skilled artisans and heritage crafts but also offered a welcoming space where social bonds were formed and creative passions reignited.
The Power of Making: Craft as a Tool for Inclusion
The heart of the Skillshare event was its accessibility. No prior experience was needed—just curiosity and a willingness to engage. Participants of all ages, skill levels, and walks of life came together to create, learn, and share. The event also attracted emerging and experienced craft practitioners who got the chance to try out a new technique and connect with their peers. From wool felting and textile upcycling to blacksmithing and wirework, each workshop broke down barriers and fostered collaboration. Whether threading a needle or striking iron, attendees overcame challenges with mutual support, often remarking how the experience sparked confidence and pride.
Importantly, the event showcased the inclusive and unifying potential of crafts. By working side by side, participants exchanged not just techniques but stories, perspectives, and experiences. Artisans from diverse cultural backgrounds shared their knowledge, enriching the workshops with heritage and meaning. For newcomers to the local community, Skillshare became more than a creative outlet—it was an entry point into new friendships and a sense of belonging.

Workshops That Wove Creativity with Purpose
Across six unique sessions, participants explored traditional and contemporary crafts in a supportive and inspiring environment:
- Wet & Dry Wool Felting sessions introduced participants to the calming and sensory-rich process of turning natural wool into felted art and soap – combining creativity with mindfulness.
- In Blacksmithing, participants experienced a rare and empowering introduction to forging, appreciating the skill and strength behind this fading tradition.
- Textile Upcycling through patchwork offered a sustainable and expressive alternative to fast fashion, encouraging resourcefulness and design thinking.
- The Copper Wire Workshop introduced soldering and design basics, helping attendees craft wall-ready artworks while learning practical fabrication skills.
- Embroidery, taught with a focus on relaxation and self-expression, allowed participants to take home personalized stitched pieces and new techniques for mindful creativity.
Each session was led by expert instructors who received consistent praise for their knowledge, patience, and warmth – contributing greatly to the positive, empowering atmosphere.
Celebrating Achievements and Impact
The response was overwhelmingly positive. Over 85% of participants reported gaining new skills, with many expressing a renewed passion for creative work. More than just learning new techniques, attendees experienced the joy of producing tangible results, connecting with like-minded individuals, and exploring the possibility of turning hobbies into career paths or community contributions.
Quotes from participants say it best:

What’s Next: Sustaining the Momentum
The event also served as a platform to promote the Craftwork4All project and invite artisans and craft enthusiasts to express interest in future collaborations. Participants were eager for follow-up workshops and deeper dives into the crafts they had discovered. One of the key takeaways was a strong desire for continued learning, whether for personal growth, professional development, or educational outreach.
A Step Toward Stronger, More Creative Communities
Skillshare demonstrated the unique power of crafts to foster social cohesion, celebrate diversity, and awaken creativity in everyday life. In rural and urban settings alike, these kinds of shared creative experiences can build bridges—between generations, cultures, and communities.
Through the lens of Craftwork4All, we’re reminded that making things by hand is not only about tradition—it’s about connection, empowerment, and transformation. Whether hammering iron or threading a needle, these simple acts carry the potential to spark big change.
Stay tuned for future workshops, residencies, and calls for artisans as Craftwork4All continues to grow its platform and deepen its social impact.
