Penelope Loom

Meropi Ververi is the founder, designer, and weaver behind PENELOPE, a Greek textile studio based in Thessaloniki. Her journey into the world of craft began as a legacy from her grandmother, which she later embraced professionally after studying interior architecture in Thessaloniki and working for several years in the design field. Eventually, she transitioned into textile weaving, following her passion for handmade craftsmanship and sustainable design.

Expected and aspired co-creation

For the co-creation project with the Craft Practitioner, we aspire to design and produce a handmade handwoven handbag and a belt. These two accessories will combine traditional weaving techniques with contemporary design, reflecting both the identity of our studio and the creative input of the visiting artisan.

The creative process will begin from the very first stages of weaving: starting with warping the threads, preparing the loom, and setting the simoni (the structure that guides the weave). The Craft Practitioner will be guided through every step of this process until we reach the final weaving stage. All weaving will be done on a traditional, manual wooden loom, which is central to our practice.

Our contribution to this collaboration will be the transmission of knowledge and skills in the almost-forgotten art of weaving—a craft deeply rooted in Greek tradition. We will share all technical and artistic aspects of our practice, from material selection to finishing techniques.

In exchange, we are eager to gain fresh ideas and new perspectives on product design from the Craft Practitioner. We hope this exchange will enrich our creative vision and lead to innovative interpretations of timeless techniques.
