FarmLab
- Kapfenstein, Austria
Located on a small farm in the scenic countryside of Southeast Styria, Austria, FarmLab blends traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge digital fabrication to explore new paths toward a regenerative future.
themes involved in our work
- Circularity (e.g. reusing materials);
- Digital (e.g. digital fabrication).
Expected and aspired co-creation
At FarmLab, we propose a co-creation journey that celebrates traditional craft practices rooted in place, materials, and seasonality. The final piece will be defined collaboratively with the Craft Practitioner and may take the form of a textile, ceramic, or wooden object that reflects both their expertise and the unique resources of our rural environment. Rather than imposing a predetermined outcome, we envision a process of mutual exploration and making.
Our creative process will begin with a shared research phase focused on local materials and techniques. The Craft Practitioner will be invited to engage with our various workshop spaces: a textile atelier with vertical loom, felting and sewing tools; a ceramics studio with kilns and raku setup; and a wood workshop for hand and machine work. If desired, our digital fabrication lab (including CNC router, laser cutter, and 3D printer) can support or complement the work, but it is not a requirement.
As a semi-self-sufficient small farm with sheep, chickens, an orchard, and an edible garden, we are especially interested in crafts related to wool and sheepskin. We welcome practitioners who work with wool in any form—spinning, felting, weaving, or innovative applications—bringing new value to this abundant and often underused local resource.
We will share our expertise in natural dyeing, wool processing, traditional ceramic techniques, and woodworking, and offer technical guidance and material support. In exchange, we are eager to learn new or lesser-known craft practices, refined hand skills, or cultural approaches that expand our perspective. We particularly welcome practitioners who value slow processes, sustainability, and place-based storytelling.
This co-creation will result in both a tangible piece and a shared experience that strengthens our identity as a rural creative hub bridging tradition, ecology, and contemporary craft practice.
