  • Odivelas, Portugal

Rita Martins Pereira is a weaving textile designer and weaver and have a small studio near Lisbon.
I have experience in contemporary and traditional weaving techniques. With a background in textile design and craftsmanship, Rita has developed a deep understanding of materiality, sustainability, and cultural heritage.
Her practice focuses on creating handwoven pieces that integrate natural fibers, plant-based elements, and regionally sourced materials. With a passion for exploring the intersection between tradition and innovation, they have worked on projects that involve collaborative weaving, community engagement, and the reinterpretation of historical textile techniques.
Rita has participated in international textile residencies and craft initiatives, demonstrating her ability to merge artistic research with hands-on practice.
Through her artistic practice, Rita seeks to create meaningful connections between people, places, and traditions by translating landscapes and collective narratives into woven artworks.

Expected and aspired co-creation

I would like to host a Craft Practitioner for 10 days to co-create a textile piece that brings together my practice as a weaver and the skills of the invited artist. As the founder of Cross Lights, a luxury textile brand, I work mainly with handweaving and colour, but I also love to explore creative techniques using nature, vegetal fibres I collect myself, and reused materials that I prepare in the studio. For this collaboration, I imagine a woven panel or a small sculptural textile object that mixes weaving with another handmade technique—such as knitting, crochet, embroidery or basketry. I am open to discovering the right approach together.

The process would begin with a simple and inspiring exchange: brainstorming ideas, sharing references, understanding each other’s way of working and defining the direction of the final piece. We would then collect materials and gather inspiration from the local surroundings, colours and textures of the landscape, and the natural fibres available. After choosing the palette and the materials, we would work in the studio to experiment, test combinations and slowly shape the piece. The final stage would be dedicated to weaving, assembling and finishing the work side by side.
