During my time at Textilné Centrum, I created five handkerchiefs inspired by the traditional ceramics of my hometown, Granada (Spain), known as fajalauza. The motifs—birds, pomegranates, flowers, and geometric shapes—reflect the rich visual language of this local tradition. While I developed the designs and carved the printing blocks independently, drawing on previous experience, the co-creation took place during the application of the resist paste and the indigo dyeing process. This part of the work was guided by designer Daniela Danielis, whose expertise was essential in mastering the technical aspects of modrotlač. Her support transformed the studio into a space of shared knowledge, blending guidance with personal exploration. This piece consists of five handkerchiefs inspired by traditional fajalauza ceramics from Granada, Spain. I designed and carved the printing blocks myself, using motifs like birds, pomegranates, and flowers. With the guidance of Daniela Danielis at Textilné Centrum, I applied the resist paste and dyed the fabric with indigo, learning each step of the modrotlač process through hands-on collaboration.
During my residency, organized by Creative Industry Košice, I had the opportunity to engage deeply with both the practice and the cultural context of modrotlač. I met ethnologist Ľudmila Mitrová, who shared insights into historical modrotlač blocks and their construction. I also visited designer Mišena Juhász in her studio and learned about her work blending resist dye, screenprinting, and indigo to create garments that merge tradition with contemporary design. CIKE also supported me in sourcing essential materials—fabric, wood, and tools—from local vendors. At Textilné Centrum, I had access to a dedicated studio space where I designed, carved, and printed the blocks. With the guidance of Daniela Danielis, I completed the entire process of applying the resist paste and dyeing with indigo.
I acquired hands-on experience with the modrotlač technique, developing both technical skills and a deeper understanding of its historical and cultural context. The residency strengthened my ability to work across traditional processes with contemporary perspectives and has inspired new directions in my artistic practice. I also expanded my professional network, connecting with Slovakian designers, cultural workers, and fellow craftspeople—relationships that may lead to future collaborations and exchange.
