Tetiana Bilous

My name is Tetiana Bilous. I am from Ukraine, from the city of Kharkiv. I am a professional artist and teacher with many years of experience in the field of textile art. In my practice, I work with both traditional and contemporary weaving techniques, using both new and recycled materials. I am skilled in various textile techniques, including fabric painting, weaving, embroidery, felting, cyanotype, and mixed media. Alongside textile art, I deeply love painting. I often transfer the principles of painting into textile works through color harmony, composition, and delicate combinations of tones.

My art is an attempt to preserve and reinterpret the traditions of textile craftsmanship, giving them a contemporary voice. I am inspired by the connection between textiles, cultural memory, and heritage. That is why my works become stories told through fabric — a kind of woven chronicle.

Today, my artistic practice focuses on themes of memory, migration, loss, restoration, and inner resilience. I am fascinated by the weaving process itself — slow, meditative, and deeply therapeutic for me. Thread is not only a material, but also a symbol of connection between generations, people, and time. In my works, I combine the rough natural textures of linen, wool, and jute with subtle color transitions, creating a contrast between fragility and strength. I often use texture, volume, transparency, and layering as metaphors for human experience and memory, which is never entirely whole.

In times of destruction and profound change, humanity once again turns to traditions, trying to find answers to contemporary challenges in ancient stories and symbols. It is a kind of attempt to return to the point where balance was once lost, in order to better understand ourselves today. During the events currently unfolding in the world, it is especially important for me to speak about cultural memory, personal identity, and the strength of heritage. I believe that contemporary people should not only preserve the knowledge and experience of previous generations, but also reinterpret them in order to move forward with confidence and build their own path.

In my artistic practice, I work with various textile techniques, using both new and recycled materials. However, hand weaving has become a particularly meaningful craft and a true passion for me. That is why I constantly strive to expand my knowledge, especially by mastering the loom.

For me, weaving is not only a way of creating artworks, but also a process of deep immersion, concentration, and inner calm. The interlacing of threads helps me relax, focus on sensations, and even functions as a form of meditation and personal art therapy.

Weaving is one of the oldest crafts, carrying within it the experience and knowledge of many generations. In my region, weaving is not very popular today, which is why it is important for me not only to work with this technique, but also to sustain interest in it, reinterpret it within a contemporary artistic context, and demonstrate that traditional craft can still sound relevant today.

Through my work, I strive to convey the warmth of handmade labor, as well as the harmony of lines, colors, and textures.

Breath of the City

The painting depicts a City coming to life after darkness. Its buildings still bear the scars of the past, but the first sprouts of life are already breaking through. Flowers—symbols of resilience and renewal—blossom. Birds carry light in their wings. “Reconstruction” is a city that breathes life, rebuilding itself from the ruins

Roots tapestry

On the canvas, a war-ravaged city is depicted. Yet, despite everything, a tree begins to grow. Its mighty roots draw strength from the earth, infused with memory, pain, and love for the homeland.

The tree is a symbol of life that is reborn from the darkest times. Even in the most terrifying moments, the roots hold us firm, reminding us of who we are, where we come from, and what we must preserve.
