Đina Radulj

I am a final-year master’s student at the Academy of Arts in Split. What stands out in my work is the personal layer I bring into each peace while still allowing space for others to connect with it and interpret it in their own way. So that makes my work unique and originally. Also what excites me the most is the potential that unfolds through strong conceptual organisation – I often begin with a few key words of themes and from there an idea for the work naturally grows.

Troughout my studies and personal practice I work with a variety of mediums and crafts. I enjoy experimenting and combining different materials to find new ways of expressing. I work step by step from the concept to the final peace. I usually start with sketches often in the form of collages that helps me develop the idea. One of my favourite techniques is collage and linocut because I enjoy the process of carving and strong visual impact it creates.

For this assignment, I used collected images of fashion models along with a photo of my grandmother and me dressed in traditional folk costumes. I cut the two of us out of the photograph and created a collage with models from the Balenciaga fashion brand. I combined the traditional with the unconventional, which is the core concept of this work—merging the incompatible: two different eras and styles of clothing, now positioned side by side in the same space. It’s about breaking with tradition and confronting it with emerging fashion trends. Colored linocut. I did this work in my first year in collage. It was free topic and I decide to make a tired woman who works late into the night out of her cheramic bowls.
