My name is Mária Hredzáková and I am the founder and designer behind FeMale, a small Slovak brand of original porcelain jewellery. I work with porcelain in its liquid, plastic and solid forms, shaping each piece by hand. My jewellery is hand-painted, glazed and fired three times at temperatures of up to 1,250 °C; selected pieces are decorated with 24-carat gold.
What makes my work unique is the combination of traditional craftsmanship, delicate detail and contemporary design. Every piece is slightly different and carries the marks of the handmade process. I create jewellery that helps women express their individuality and feel special.
I am fascinated by the transformation of raw porcelain into a strong yet delicate object. This slow process has taught me patience, trust and the courage to experiment. I am excited to meet other European makers, exchange experience and discover new ways to develop my craft and build a sustainable creative business.
I first became interested in jewellery-making through polymer clay, but I soon realised that it was not the right material for me. I was looking for something more durable, natural and refined – a material that could give each piece a lasting and luxurious quality. That search led me to porcelain, which I have now been working with for three years.
I do not have just one favourite technique. What excites me most is developing new ideas, experimenting with different forms of porcelain, inventing my own techniques and exploring technological processes. Porcelain can be unpredictable, so every experiment teaches me something new.
I also love the final stage of assembling the jewellery. After weeks or sometimes months of designing, shaping, drying, painting, glazing and firing, all the individual elements finally come together. This is the moment when the piece receives its final character and becomes a finished piece of jewellery that someone can wear.
Artworks
The fox is one of the strongest motifs in our work and also our personal talisman. It is especially loved by our followers. This piece took several months to develop—from the first drawing and 3D modelling to mould-making, prototyping and the finished porcelain jewel. Technical challenges forced us to redesign the mould and start again. The process taught me new skills, marked an important step forward in my practice and revealed many new possibilities for working with porcelain.
This hand-painted rosehip necklace is inspired by nature, autumn—my favourite season—and memories of childhood. Painting such a tiny motif requires complete concentration and very fine brushstrokes. The piece is delicate, feminine and intentionally simple: porcelain needs very little to shine, while subtle 24-carat gold details enhance its natural beauty. For me, it represents the quiet poetry found in small things.
Creating these all-porcelain rings required skills that we spent months developing and refining. Each piece is shaped, painted and fired by hand, making every ring truly unique. Although their sculptural form may appear bold on the hand, porcelain gradually warms to body temperature. This makes the material feel surprisingly natural and intimate when worn—a small wearable object with its own character.
I am deeply inspired by natural forms. For this pendant, we pressed a real sage leaf into raw porcelain, capturing even its finest veins. I love how faithfully porcelain records these delicate details and how soft colours bring them to life. The edge, finished with 24-carat gold, gives the piece a subtle sense of refinement and luxury while preserving its natural character.
